JC12675Vesuvianite.  Bill Waley Mine (Bill Waley Indian Allotment Mine), Drum Valley, Washapie Mountain, Tulare County, California.  17 x 7 x 6 cm 906g  $250.00   Bright luster crystals through the center.   This one was coated with blue calcite which has been etched off.   Looks better in person.   There were very few cabinet specimens collected from this find.   I first collected these from the Bill Waley Indian Allotment tungsten mine in Drum Valley, CA in 1972. They were in a cave type area in the mine, where on many, the calcite had been dissolved away leaving the vesuvianite.   I wrote the location up in "California Geology", October 1974. Vol. 27, Article title: Loellingite and Black Vesuvianite from Tulare county, California. Pages 224-226. California Div. of Mines and Geology publication.    Mostly of interest as an odd color, and somewhat strange form for vesuvianite.  A one time find, nothing is left of these, and a rare occurrence for vesuvianite.   It has been suggested that these might be wiluite...I compared the x-ray diffraction pattern I took of these, and it appears to be closer to vesuvianite, although the diffraction pattern for wiluite and vesuvianite are very close in appearance.

An idealized drawing of what the vesuvianite from near Clio, Plumas county, California looks like.   Flattened di-pyramids.

The following specimens represent the collecting efforts from over a dozen pockets from this locality.  All of the specimens were in small, 6" or so, to medium 12-18"  sized, pockets filled with dirt and sand...where the limestone had dissolved away and left the vesuvianite specimens loose in the pockets and covered with dirt/sand.  Any damage to the specimens was through natural processes and possibly damage from earthquakes.   Some of the pockets had the vesuvianite heavily covered with diopside that has weathered so severely that it falls off the vesuvianite in any type of cleaning process...essentially being rotten.  A couple of small pockets had diopside crystals on the vesuvianite that actually held together as discreet crystals of a light green color.

JC10985.   Vesuvianite, diopside.  Nr. Clio, Plumas county, California.   5 x 6 cm  11g   $40.00  4cm crystals.  The diopside has coated and actually grown into the crystals a bit, giving this somewhat pockmarked appearance.  Most of the diopside is present as somewhat wormy looking crystal aggregates partially coating the brown vesuvianite.  Where the vesuvianite is not coated with diopside, it has glassy luster.  The vesuvianite crystals are complete.

JC10995.   Vesuvianite.  Nr. Clio, Plumas county, California.   6 x 6.5 cm   146g.  $40.00    3.5 cm crystal.   A two sided piece, not sure which is best.   The main crystal seen here is complete except for where other crystals have grown against it, restricting the growth there, as can be seen on the left side of the crystal, as a sort of whitish area.   The same growth interference is present on the lower front of the big crystal.   Glassy luster on the complete faces.
JC10995.  Reverse.  Diopside, now rotted away has left the face with small tiny pits in the crystal.   The lower center crystal is complete.
JC10996.   Vesuvianite.  Nr. Clio, Plumas county, California.   5 x 6 cm  181g    $45.00   4cm main crystal.  This one is from the pocket that had a secondary growth of sparkly orangish brown vesuvianite on the main brown vesuvianite crystals.    The crystal is about 50% complete, with a portion missing on the left front where another crystal was growing on the main crystal and has been broken off.     The bottom one third of the crystal is missing.
JC10996.  Back side.  The back side of the crystal has been coated by a secondary layer of orangish brown sparkly vesuvianite.   The big crystal is pretty much complete underneath this secondary coating.
JC10997.   Vesuvianite.  Nr. Clio, Plumas county, California.   5 x 7 cm  201g.   $30.00   3 cm crystals and smaller.    Brown crystal with good bright luster.  Several of the crystals have had their tips of one face edge broken off, leaving them partially incomplete.

JC10998.   Vesuvianite.  Nr. Clio, Plumas county, California.   5 x 6 cm  122g.   $45.00    2.5 cm main crystal.  The main crystal, on the top of the specimen is complete with no broken corners; the satellite crystals are mostly complete also.    The light area on the lower left portion is incomplete growth, where another crystal, now absent, grew against it.   A little pitting is present as white spots where another mineral grew and is now gone.

JC11003.   Vesuvianite.  Nr. Clio, Plumas county, California.   5 x 8 cm  249g.  $40.00.    3.5 cm and smaller crystals.  This is one of the ones from a single pocket that had a lot of beige/orangish brown secondary growth on the crystals.  It appears to be vesuvianite, but has not been analyzed.    The crystals are mostly complete.   The whole specimens looks a little lighter in color than the photo would indicate.
